Information for Teachers

What is the study, and why does it matter?

The Developing Children’s Connectome Project (DCCP) follows children who took part in the Developing Human Connectome Project (dHCP) as babies, helping us understand how brain development relates to learning, behaviour, social skills and emotional wellbeing throughout childhood.

By combining brain imaging with information from children, families and schools, we aim to understand why children follow different developmental pathways and what factors help them thrive. This research could inform future approaches to supporting children's learning, wellbeing and mental health both in and beyond the classroom.

What does taking part involve?

Families take part in three visits over two years, helping us understand how children grow, learn and develop over time.

Child Brain Scan

Children have a child-friendly MRI scan while watching videos and listening through headphones.

Child Activities

Children take part in games and activities that help us learn about thinking, emotions, friendships and development.

Parent Questionnaires

Parents complete questionnaires about their child's development, behaviour and everyday experiences at home.

With parental consent, a child's school will be contacted and their class teacher invited to contribute to the study. Teachers will be asked to complete a small number of online questionnaires, including the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA), using a secure online system and unique login sent by email.

The questionnaires take approximately 1–1.5 hours to complete and help us understand a child's learning, behaviour and wellbeing in the school environment. This information is invaluable because it provides a different perspective from home and study assessments, helping us build a more complete picture of children's development across different settings.

Teachers will receive a voucher in recognition of their time and contribution to the study.
